Goombay Festival This Weekend!
“Goombay, a three-day showcase of African-Caribbean culture from food to crafts to music, returns Sept 9-11 at Roger McGuire Green at Pack Square Park, just around the corner from the YMI Cultural Center, which sponsors the event.
Goombay has plenty of entertainment with the 7 p.m. Saturday headliner, rap producer and performer DJ Kool who produced the 1996 hit “Let Me Clear My Throat.” Also on the Goombay lineup: Asheville singer Lyric, the R&B and funk band Free Flow, Project Negus and the Mossa Kan dancers. Also scheduled at Goobay are the Set It Off Step Show and the Hair-A-Tage hair show. The Goombay parade, beginning at Triangle Park on The Block at Market and Eagle streets, is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Goombay will have two stages – one at the top of the park, the other in front of Asheville City Hall and the Buncombe County Courthouse.
Goombay is paying close attention to the festival vendors, always as big draw, said Stephanie Swepson-Twitty, chairwoman of the YMI Cultural Center. ‘We’ve been making sure that these are the vendors that people want to see,’ she said. Hours are 5-10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.” – Asheville Citizen-Times
There will be a festival kick off event on Thursday, September 8, with a party on The Block from 5 – 8 in Triangle Park, and the Goombay Art Show opening from 7 – 9 pm in the YMI Gallery, 39 S. Market Street.
