ACC ALL-STAR CLASSIC BASKETBALL GAME
April 14 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm$10
The ACC-Crossfire Classic is entering its 26th year, and every single year of the event, it’s drawn thousands of fans.
Crossfire Ministries co-founder Randy Shepherd is hoping for a sellout once again this year, as the event is drawing some of ACC basketball’s biggest stars. This year’s list of players who have verbally committed to participate include North Carolina seniors Luke Maye, Cameron Johnson and Kenny Williams; N.C. State senior Torin Dorn and Wake Forest seniors Ikenna Smart, Aaron Spivey and Anthony Bilas.
This year’s game will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14 at UNC Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.
“We’ve got a great lineup once again, and we’re really excited entering our 26th year. We’ve estimated that we’ve had more than 80,000 fans come to the games during that time,” Shepherd said.
Tickets are once again $10.
“You can’t beat that price. Most ACC basketball games these days will cost you over $50 per ticket, so we are blessed to be able to offer tickets at such a low price,” Shepherd said.
The ACC stars and the game itself are definitely big draws. For Shepherd and Crossfire Ministries co-founder Jamie Johnson, the event’s main purpose is to spread the gospel. The duo took several other members of their Crossfire team to the Philippines recently to share the gospel and also play basketball games.
“We just got back from our trip,” Shepherd said Friday evening. “We traveled to six different cities there and played in six different games. We do this trip twice a year. This year, we had 9,002 professions of faith.”
Shepherd’s hoping for more professions at the game at UNC Asheville. As in years past, Crossfire Ministries will hold a sermon during halftime of the game, with an opportunity for professions of faith after the sermon.
The doors to Kimmel Arena will open at 1 p.m. for an autograph session, and the first 100 people through the door will receive a free Crossfire T-shirt. The game will follow at 2:30 p.m., and it will be followed by a 3-point contest and also a dunk contest.
While the ACC stars will have plenty of talent, the Crossfire team isn’t too shabby, either. Players include Shepherd (who is a 3-point threat), Johnson, former Brevard College standout Jonathan Whitson, former Western Carolina standout Willie Battle and former UNC Asheville standouts Matt Dickey and John Cannon.
“Last year we beat (the ACC stars) by 20 points,” Shepherd said. “It seems to go back and forth every year. I think we’ve won close to half of the games.”
